For sale is an outstanding 1848 pictorial American needlepoint/sampler from Derby Connecticut in New Haven County. This sampler came out of the Ann Phillips collection in Verplank New York. It was acquired at sale of the partial estate from a sale in the Hudson Valley New York. This sampler is inscribed as follows: "Jane Bellamy aged 14 years April 20th Anno Domeni 1848 Derby" We believe the Bellamy family was a prominent family in and around New Haven County Connecticut in the late 18th through 19th centuries. The needlepoint work on this sampler is outstanding. It features a gorgeous pictorial scene of probably a brother and sister standing in a landscape and surrounded by a gorgeous border of floral decorative patterns. This sampler/needlework is laid down and framed in what we believe is the original flame mahogany frame with gilt border. It has a glass cover. The frame has some separations at the corners and one longitudinal splinter. We believe the glass plate to be inserted between the gold gilded band and frame so that it was not pressed against the sampler directly.. We would probably suggest re-laying the glass a better way. This is how it hung in the collection. Because this needlepoint/sampler is under glass the listing photo coloration is more like the close up pictures then the actual listing profile read more
