This Compote or Covered Candy Dish was part of a line of specialty glassware produced by William T. Gillinder & Sons of Philadelphia. The "Frosted Lion" pattern was one of their most popular and beautiful designs. It was made around 1877. Description: The Frosted base has three low-relief Lions and three Palm Trees. The lid has a magnificent frosted Lion handle in a "ready to spring" position. This piece is definately an original and not a reproduction. It has been in my family since new. The Compote body measures exactly 5" from the bottom of the base to the rim, and 8 1/2" to the top of the lion's head. It is 4 3/4" in diameter. Condition: The jar itself is perfect, including the frosted base and the six points on the hexagonal clearbase (w it joins the frosted base). The Lion handle on the lid is perfect. T is a 3/8" chip on the underside of the lid rim (see Photo # 6), and two very small spots on the rim of the frosted portion of the lid w the frosting is worn off (see Photo # 2). I would consider the condition to be Very Good to Excellent, but not Mint. Winner agrees to pay actual Priority Mail Insured shipping. Please see my other auctions. Thanks for looking!
