Patent Bezard compasses endured a moderate amount of changes in Europe between the early 1900s and WWII.This aluminum and wood based example is Mr Bezard's first compass model. (Later military models are based on this design)The aluminum case is marked on top: "Patent Bezard, DRP, 157,329, DIREKTION" (Followed by an arrow)Opening up the compass reveals an early paper arrow on the compass needle. The dial is marked 0 to 360. The rotating dial has a matching cutout of the compass needle design. The inside of the aluminum cover is stamped "14176" and it has an arrow attached to it.This compass is in excellent overall condition. The class is in perfect condition. The compass points strong to North and it has a jeweled pivot. The base and case of the compass are in excellent condition with no dents or dings. Closing the case automatically activates the needle lock. This is a very early, and rare Bezard compass. I have only seen a couple of these models in the past 12 years. It is missing the aluminum loop by the pendant, but this can be replaced. My book Compass Chronicles has a chapter dedicated to the Patent Bezard compass and this wood based model is described in detail.I am downsizing my collection a bit offering a wide range of compasses in condition and rarity. I have set a reserve on this auction as this is a very rare example. read more
