Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Mary Kenward, 19th May, 1819. This sampler is an absolute gem! It is silk worked on very fine linen with exquisite stitch work throughout. The centre of the sampler is stitched with the following words surrounded by a floral plaque The holy power that clothes the senseless earth with woods, with fruits, with flowers and verdant grass Whose bounteous hand feeds the whole brute creation, knows all our wants and has enough to give us Above the words is a superb farm scene depicting a two storey house, birds flying overhead and grass in front. To the left of the house is a tree and barn with a wonderful cow and pigs. Beneath the verse is a central Tree of Life motif complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing on either side. They are surrounded by various magical motifs - exotic birds, butterflies, floral baskets, flowers and two tiny rabbits in a field. Mary's details are written below. The whole thing is surrounded by an intricate floral border. The linen has slight overall discolouration and the colours of the silks are good. As can be seen on the photographs, there is an area of damage to the bottom right corner and the odd small hole here and there. Also, the sampler is stitched onto backing paper (see photo 12).
