THANK YOU FOR VISITING OUR AUCTION COTTAGE and CASTLE DESCRIPTION: * EARLY MASONIC KNIGHTS TEMPLAR CHAPT. PENNY ASTORIA, OR * This is a Masonic Knights Templar Penny issued by the STS. JOHN CHAPTER NO. 14, ASTORIA, OREGON. We are told that this an early piece from early 1900's. It is dated "A.L. 2407" (we do not understand this date, it may be some special method used to date by Templars). It is made of copper and measures approximately 1 3/16" in diameter. These pennies are known as Masonic Pennies, Pocket Pieces or Chapter Pennies. To the Mason his chapter penny was his most prized possession. He carried it around in his pocket and they are often well worn. These pennies were similar to having a credit card today. They were given as a pledge when money was borrowed or when a serice was rendered. Often the penny was not returned until the debt was repaid or payment was made for the service rendered. This penny is in very good condition for its age. We will send within three business days upon receipt of money order or cashiers check. We ship in 10 days with personal check.
