EarlyPearlwareChild's Plate MONTHS OF THE YEAR ~~~ JANUARY Swanseac. 1840 This is a superb child's transferware plate or porridge bowl made around 1840. The plate measures 7" in diameter with press moulded daisy border and gently scalloped rim. The dark brown transfer printing is embellished with four-color hand clobbering in blue, green, red, and yellow. The plate is finely potted and finished with pearlware glaze. The central image features the month of January, depicted as a young shepherd or putti sitting on a plinth surrounded by the vestiges of his winter garden. The plate made as part of a series featuring the 12 months and 4 seasons of the year. The central image, with a slightly different border, is shown in the book Gifts for Good Children written by Noel Riley and published by Richard Dennis. The plate resembles children's wares hailing from the Staffordshire region, but according to the author, it is likely that it was made in one of several Northern factories, particularly the Ynysmedw Pottery near Swansea . The plate has a slightly illegible impressed backstamp that looks like "YP" or "SP". Plates and mugs with images like this were made in the early to mid-19th century to be given as gifts for a special occasion or rewards of merit and were also used to aid in the education of young children.
