UP FOR AUCTION IS A LATE 1800'S ROOKWOOD STANDARD VASE DESIGNED AND SIGNED BY Kitaro ShirayamadaniThis vase is in excellent conditionand so beautiful I really hate to part with it, but I know that it needs to be in a collection somewhere safe. The colors are bold and vivid and the flowers so intricate that they look real under the glaze, the pictures truly do not do it justice. THERE IS SOME AGE CRAZING in the glaze here and there.Study the pictures and you will see a very small flea bite chipping in the glaze on bottom of the base probably from the grinding process to remove excess glaze so the vase would sit flat. Other than the small flea bite spot on the base there are no chips or cracks anywhere else on the vase.VASE HEIGHT: 8"WIDTH AT TOP OF VASE: 3-3/4"WIDTH AT WIDEST POINT ON VASE: 6 1/2"WIDTH OF THE BASE: 3-1/8"TOTAL VASE WEIGHT: 2lbs 1.4ozMARKS: ROOKWOOD (RP) VASE # 517A SIGNATURE OF THE ARTIST: Kitaro Shirayamadani (WRITTEN IN JAPANESE CHARACTERS)OTHER MARKS ON THE VASE: WDATE: late 1800's (this may have been one of his very first designs with Rookwood as the signature is carved into the base instead of in a raised design which he used later) You will also notice that the Rookwood stamp is on the edge of the base instead of the middle and part of the stamp has been ground off in the finishing process of grinding down the glaze. Making this vase truly one of a kind!! Maria Longworth Nichols Storer , daughter of wealthy Joseph Longworth, founded Rookwood Pottery in 1880 as a result of being inspired by what she saw at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia.Storer sought a "standard" look for Rookwood, and developed the "Standard Glaze," a yellow tinted, high gloss, clear glaze often used over leaf or flower motifs by the company.Rookwood also produced pottery in the Japonism trend, after Storer invited Japanese artist Kitaro Shirayamadani to come to Cincinnati and work for the company in 1887.Kitaro Shirayamadani (1865 – 1948) was a Japanese ex-patriate ceramics painter who worked for Rookwood Pottery in Cincinnati Ohio from 1887 until 1948. In 1991 one of his pieces dated at 1900 sold for $198,000.00According to several sources his designs impacted the whole Rookwood pottery design lines. I do not find an exact date on the vase, but if you are a collector of Rookwood Pottery you should clearly recognize his signature and know that his pieces are highly collectible vases because they are very scarce and extremely rare.
