This is a wonderful 19th century, Japanese miniature ivory sculpture of a peacock hand-carved in extraordinarily fine detail . The piece is carved from very dense elephant ivory in several segments then pinned or pegged together. T are traces of applied pigment and/or residue in the fissures and carved recesses and the patina is original and untouched, probably due for some elective restorative cleaning. Condition is very good with the total or partial loss of three of the bird's six toes being the only observed compromise. The bird stands unaided, however, and the loss isn't obtrusive. T is no other damage or repair, aside from the aforementioned, and the sculpture overall is truly striking - a carving with extraordinary definition and subtlety.
