Edo Period Nanban Tsuba Katana Japanese Samurai Sword Unique iron tsuba from the Edo period (1603- 1868), a period known for relative peace among the warrior class as the arts and crafts flourished. This tsuba is in the nanban style with a mokko (lobed shaped pattern). Nanban refers to a style that became popular during the 17th century due to trade between mainland Asia and Japan by way of India and Southeast Asia through China. During this period metalwork inspired by influences from the mainland became popular, many designs being of a threadlike shape that is used by climbing plants typical of Southeast Asia, also known as a trendil design. If you examine this tsuba you will notice the trendil rapping itself around the tsuba. This piece is a nice example of Edo period nanban craftsmanship. Definitely a great piece to finish that project you have been working on or to add to your private collection. This is a wonderful opportunity to own a piece of Japan’s ancient feudal past of the samurai. Wooden tsuba storage box is included.
