Dramatic watercolor painting of a man throwing a rock at a bird, by the early 20th century New York social realist artist Eugene Higgins. Original watercolor on paper mounted in an ornate frame and linen mat. Pencil signed lower right, and titled "The Intruder" on the backing paper on the frame. We examined the art with a magnifying glass to determine that it is not a reproduction, but did not examine it out of the frame. Image size is 8.5 inches tall by 11.25 inches wide. Overall frame size is 18 inches tall by 20.5 inches wide. PROVENANCE: We acquired this and a group of other works by Eugene Higgins at a live auction in Los Angeles that was from the collection of Betty and Alan Goldfield, the original founders of the highly regarded Goldfield Galleries in Los Angeles, California, during the mid-20th century, which specialized in early American art. Information about the Goldfield Galleries can be found in the Archives of American art at the Smithsonian Institution. CONDITION: The art is in very good condition though we did not examine it out of the frame and don't know what method is used to mount it, linen mat is in good condition, gesso frame has large chips in two corners, and scratches all around.
