Great sepia drawing of a stone carver by the early 20th century New York social realist artist Eugene Higgins. Original sepia chalk drawing on paper. Pencil signed lower center, and multiple labels on the back. We examined the art with a magnifying glass to determine that it is not a reproduction, but did not examine it out of the frame. Image size is 9 inches tall by 6.125 inches wide. Overall frame size is 17 inches tall by 13.25 inches wide. PROVENANCE: On the backing paper there is a faint red stamp in the lower right corner that says "From the Estate of Eugene Higgins Owned by Irving Newman" and there are also two "Christie's East" auction house stickers each with different numbers, and another label with the title and artist information. We acquired this and a group of other works by Eugene Higgins at a live auction in Los Angeles that was from the collection of Betty and Alan Goldfield, the original founders of the highly regarded Goldfield Galleries in Los Angeles, California, during the mid-20th century, which specialized in early American art. Information about the Goldfield Galleries can be found in the Archives of American art at the Smithsonian Institution. CONDITION: The art is in very good condition with just a minor crease in the lower right corner, old mat is in good condition, frame has scratches all around. ARTIST' read more
