Exceptional Redware Plate with Slip-Decorated Alphabet Surrounding a Green and Cream Slip Bull's Eye Decoration, probably Berks County, PA origin, circa 1840-1880, with coggled edge, the interior decorated with a yellow slip alphabet of the letters "A B C D E F G" and "M H I J K L," surrounding a circular band of green slip, a band of yellow slip spots, and green slip bull's eye center. A visually-stunning plate, with an exceedingly rare slip inscription. Norwalk, Connecticut plates are known with the simple inscription "ABC". This plate is the first American redware example we have seen with such elaborate lettering. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor from the Mrs. Harry Hall White Collection in 1946. Some small spots of glaze loss and knife marks to interior. Glazed-over 1 3/4" line in surface, not visible on underside. 1 3/8" flake to reverse. Diameter 9 3/4".
