Extreme 1931 photo scrapbook Sanatorium TX & Paris TX. Offered is an original comprehensive , well organized photo scrapbook and autograph book prepared by Mary Irene Rackliff, of Paris Texas, on her 9 month stay at the Texas State Tuberculosis Sanatorium at Carlsbad, Texas - Sanatorium, Texas (“The San”). The story started on July 9, 1931 when Mary applied for admission to the “San” and arrived in September 1931. Mary worked for Southwestern Bell telephone company in Paris for 5 years and lived at 87 Graham street in Paris. Prior to leaving the “San” in the summer of 1932 she began construction of this scrapbook and autograph book “In Memory of My San Days”. A summary of the contents: >The Photo Scrapbook (over 50 pages ONLY A FEW ARE SHOWN IN THE SCANS) – well documented photos > Begins with her hand written “A toast to the San” > 4 pages of detail photos of Sanatorium grounds and buildings (most of these appear to be actual photo postcards – excellent views > 11 pages of photos – Doctors, nurses and her friends with names and their Texas city home town names (Ft. Worth, Paris, ElCampo, Honey Grove, Rosenberg, Mason, Marshall, San Antonio, San Angelo, Vernon, etc) > 1 page showing doctors including Joseph B. McKnight, the Superintendent, appointed in 1914 by Texas Governor Oscar Colquitt > 1 page 2 excellent photos of Jan. 1932 Sunday school class > 1 page with actual photo of Dr Mendenhall performing medical procedure > 2 pages with 1931 Nurse training class photo and commencement program > A page containing a 1931 letter to her signed by Dr. J. B. McKnight and the original Telegram accepting her to the “Sam” for Sept. 1931 > 9 pages of beautiful greeting cards and Texas postcards she received during her stay > 10 pages with various personal letters, “San” information booklets and requirements (some real neat items in here) including a letter with letterhead from Southland Cotton Oil Company in Paris, Tx. and several other Paris, Texas letters. > A Neat 3 page list of 25 movies she watched on her stay. The “talking picture” shows started at the Sanatorium in Feb. 1932. MGM movies were shown – attached is her hand written list of the movies and the stars in each – VERY NEAT piece of movie history. >The Autograph album (over 50 pages) – hand written and signed A wonderful little autograph book with “goodbye” messages and signed by her many friends and nurses (many with their Texas home towns). Many of the pages have tiny photo cut-outs of the person signing her book. You can easily tell she was well liked. The first girl was a dear friend, Margaret Kilman, from Paris, Texas – her bed mate. Part of what she signed “The River is Wide and I can’t Stop it, I Love You and I Can’t help it”. MANY hours of enjoyment and history in these 2 wonderful books. They had to be saved all these years for some reason. Will you be the one to find out WHY.. >>CONDITION: Overall in Very Good plus condition with slight wear and age toning. The scrapbook and contents are very clean and complete. The Autograph book is solid and complete – has some slight staining along right border edge of pages. Overall great shape to be 80 years old.
