Here we have an extremely rare signed canning jar from a Philadelphia potter who was in operation for only a short period of time from 1854 to 1860. The design of this jar is unique to this potter Arthur, Burnham & Gilroy. The mark for this potter is impressed in an ellipse on the bottom “ROBERT ARTHUR’S / PATENT / 2 ND JANUARY 1855 / ARTHUR, BURNHAM / & GILROY / PHILADEPHIA”. Note that the location, Philadelphia, was misspelled. This is a very desirable small size jar measuring only 4 "” in height, by 3” wide at the base and 3 "” wide across the rim. This is the smallest size canning jar produced by any potter. Yellow ware canning jars were mass produced by potters during the mid-1800s as every home needed them for food storage until they were replaced by glass canning jars. Very few potters signed their canning jars. When most of these jars were damaged they were simply thrown away as they were not perceived as having any value. This jar is in near mint condition with only a shallow glaze flake on the edge of the rim. Marked canning jars by this potter are extremely rare and are seldom found in any condition. This canning jar is a great piece of yellow ware and would be a valued addition to any country or yellow ware collection.
