Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for an exquisite natural shell with 19th Century cameo carving depicting a classical profile portrait of the Roman Goddess Artemis (Diana). This STUNNING carving of Artemis (Diana), goddess of the hunt and abundance features a crescent moon in her hair, is holding a bow and carrying a sheath of arrows on her back. Measures 6" high and 4 3/4" wide and is gorgeous from every direction. The cameo carving is done in high relief and in great detail and is considered to be Museum quality. The carving has exceptional details with a stunningly beautiful image. This cameo is of the finest quality done in the late 1800s by a talented cameo carver. Carved in Italy, the cameo was offered as a souvenir of Naples to wealthy visiting travelers. As stated above, the shell is beautiful on the back side also. If you collect cameo brooches, this carving would be a fabulous addition to your collection. It is the finest shell carving of this type that I have seen in 30+ years in the antiques business.
