This very large and impressive artifact is from the Hongshan Culture, a people that lived in the area that is today Inner Mongolia and China's Liaoning Provence. When the Hongshan inhabited this region, 4,500 to 2,200 BC, it was a temperate rain forest, not the the barren area it is today. The jade carvings of these people often depict creatures that no longer live t today, as well as zoomorphic and anthropomorphic combinations. The history of these people is literally written in jade. This exquisite museum quality jade carving is an ancient form called a Zhulong, or Embryo Dragon. The earliest zhulong had features that were somewhat pig like or duck like, and sometimes both. This exceptional carving is in remarkable near perfect condition with light to moderate surface erosion and calcination. It was carefully re polished at some point and thus affords a look at the beautiful color and figure of a remarkable piece of jade. This artifact is very solid and heavy, weighing over 4 pounds and measuring 12-7/8 x 5 x 1-3/8 inches. It is from a private collection w it has been cherished for a number of years. My buy it now is less than 1/2 of its store listed price.
