This fantasic archaic jade carving is a cicada. It was a heavily eroded piece that has been repolished. When the polishing is well done I can defend it because I have had three other cicadas, not polished, and this one is by far the most attractive. Chinese sellers almost always sell these large cicadas as Hongshan Culture carvings, 4500 - 2200 BC. And I would agree that the style of the carving and the erosion do indicate this, however, three of the four I have had, including this one, have archaic Chinese characters carved on them. I suspect that these letters were added during the Shang, 1600 - 1100 BC or Zhou Dynasies, 1100 - 221 BC, but t is the possibilty that they were carved in that time period. This large cicada measure about 10-1/2 x 2-3/4 x 1-5/8 inches. It is very solid and heavy regardless of stable fissures and heavy erosion. The cicada is a symbol of regeneration and resurrection like the scarab of Egypt.
