FANTASTIC TRAMP ART/PRISON ART MATCHSTICK LAPDESK ITEM DESCRIPTION PROVENANCE: This item is from a magnificent WATERFRONT estate on Long Island's Gold Coast . This magnifent Federal style home sits on a bluff that overlooks Long Island Sound with one of the most beautiful views we've ever seen ... once you got through the brush that has grown for the past year. You see, this home has been vacant for a year -- it's 90 year old occupant is in assisted living and planned to come back so she closed her home tight, covered the furniture with sheets and left everything in place. She's changed her mind and decided to move on. The home was just purchased by one of Long Island's better known car dealers and we've obtained much of the contents. Below is a photo of this exquisite home -- it's pretty overgrown -- remember, it's been empty for a year with sheets over everything on the inside ... and grass and weeds overgrowing the outside. This is a view of the front of the house --sorry no picture of the waterview from the back ... too much brush overgrowing it to get a decent photo! Over the next few weeks we will be bringing you many of the fine possessions of this magnificent home ... and other great Long Island and New York City estates. Please see our other auctions for more! ITEM: This is a brilliantly made c1930s tramp art (or prison art) folk art lapdesk. It's made of wooden matchsticks, done in an ornate herringbone design and mounted on what appears to be plywood. T are two drawers that look like they could be made of old Velveeta boxes! T is a surprise on the back which really makes this an even more spectacular piece -- the back is entirely covered in small ceramic tiles (see photo). This is a large piece -- it measures 19" Wide X 14" Deep and is 9" High and it is very sturdy. It's in excellent condition with no loss of matches ... in fact the only flaw we could find is that the bottom molding on one of the sides is missing but easily replaced (see 4th photo). This is an exceptional piece of folk art ... one of the best matchstick pieces we've ever seen and it would make an exceptional addition to any tramp art collection.
