In a hobby application, Fiber Optics are used to give the illusion of light. If you've seen a science fiction movie, like Star Wars or Star Trek, you've seen fiber optics! When you apply a light source at one end of the fiber optic strand, the other end illuminates. Because of the design of the strands, very little light is "lost" between the source and the destination. And because the filament is flexible, you are able to add illumination to small or hard to reach areas. What would I use Fiber Optics for ? Great question! Allow us to answer this question by showing you a few areas and applications that are enhanced using fiber optics: Fiber Optics add Realism to your Hobbies! In modeling, Fiber Optics are used to give the illusion of light. If you have ever seen a space ship in a science fiction movie, most likely fiber optics were incorporated into the model as part of the illumination. (Model NOT included in this auction) Here are some other Fiber Optic applications! Fiber Optic Filament is perfect for creating star ceilings. THE SPACE PLACE Yes I'm a Star Trek Fan! I used Fiber Optic filament to create a very realistic 'Star field' in our children's play room. The photos of the various fiber optic applications and projects posted in this listing are presented for educational purposes and are not included in this auction. The amount of fiber optic filament required will vary considerably depending on the scope of the project. What does this e-bay auction feature? This 'auction' features FOUR of our most popular diameters of fiber optic filament AND the 1000m LED Model illuminator. The Fiber Optic Filament .25mm .50mm .75mm & 1.0mm You'll receive 75 feet of each diameter. Each filament is 75 feet in length and is spooled on it's own solid core to help prevent tangling. (see below) These are defined as end glow fiber optics. You shine a light in one end, it emits light out of the other end. No electricity ~ no heat transmitted through the fiber. The filaments are clear in color, very flexible and easily cut with a hobby knife or scissors. Note: You need to supply the Light Source. Ultra Bright LEDs work great! Please note: These filaments are not glass, but rather comprised of polymer based materials (plastic) therefore you should utilize 'plastic friendly' glues and adhesives that do not melt the plastic to achieve the bond. The Fiber Optic Filament is machine wound on a solid spool to protect the fiber and help prevent tangling. If you've ever worked with loose fiber optic filament you know how easily it can become tangled. We go the extra mile for you to help you avoid any problems.
