FINE EARLY NEW HAMPSHIRE SAMPLER ~ HANNAH CLARK b.1793 Description: An exceptionally clean, almost pristine, and finely worked sampler completed by Hannah Clark circa 1805. Although Hannah does not give us the exact date she completed her sampler, she thoughtfully has provided us with not only her date of birth, August 7th AD 1793 but also the name of her town, Landaff NH . Hannah would have been about 12 years of age in 1805 and would undoubtedly have completed her sampler within a few years of that date. Hannah's sampler is an impressively large size, measuring about 17 ½" wide by 17" high with a total framed size of just over 19 ½" x 19". The frame is a lovely antique veneered frame (with some expected loss to the veneer). The sampler is composed of 9 lines of abc's with one number string 1-10 and Hannah has also inserted her name on the 6th line at the far right. Her use of horizontal borders is exceptional, including some lovely blues. Following her alphabets we find: Landaff NH wrought by Hannah Clark born August 7th AD 1793 and in the bottom right corner this verse: I thank my kind friends For the care of my breeding What taught me betimes To love work and reading.
