all from 1876 and 1877, the beginning of the end of the war against the Plains Indians. A number of the Texas posts were built to protect the flood of settlers moving in after the Civil War from Comanche raids. This was the case for Fort Griffin and Fort Concho, protecting West and Northwest Texas. Two letters are from these posts: one from Frank E. Conrad, Post Trader at Fort Griffin, is a cover letter that went with payment to Sharps, dated 12 May 1877; the other from Asa Frary & Bro., general merchants in Fort Concho, Texas is an order for a rifle barrel, shells, slides, and sights, dated 26 Dec. 1877. The third letter is a cover letter with payment from Tips, Clemens & Faust, merchants in New Braunfels, a German settlement in south central Texas, dated 25 May 1876. The fourth is a letter from C. Metz & Bro., Sherman, Texas to Sharps questioning a charge on an invoice: you charged us 3.00 less 10% think you must surely made mistake...as we can buy them here at hard ware stores at 2.50 by the 100, dated 12 Nov. 1877.Condition: Folds and toning as expected. Last has had some moisture, as ink is partially smeared. Others are fine.
