This is the fourth coin released in the UNESCO series, which previously has been dedicated to such historical and cultural landmarks as The Grand Canyon and The Kremlin. The Taj Mahal is a mausoleum located in Agra, India, and is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. It was built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal between the years 1632 and 1648. In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On the reverse is a finely crafted, detailed design of the Taj Mahal, shown through the Great gate (Darwaza-i rauza). The obverse is common to the UNESCO World Heritage silver coin series, and features an image of the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, together with the UNESCO logo, denomination of the coin and year of issue.
