FRANCIS BARKER ANTIQUE BRASS BOX POCKET COMPASS 1875 Rare Francis Barker & Son Brass Box Pocket Compass with lid 1875 A beautiful compass, in excellent condition, dating from late 1875 or early 1876, made by Francis Barker & Son ('Trade Mark London'). This compass is very unusual in that it can be dated quite accurately, as it has the trade mark stamp inside the lid with the 'S' facing the correct way, and the trade mark on the compass card with the 'S' facing the wrong way. This means that the case was made prior to Francis Barker's death in 1875, and the card was drawn soon after, as the 'S' was reversed after Francis Barker died. The hand-drawn compass card is marked 'Trade Mark London' and is in excellent condition. The compass has the distinctive Barker compass card design, a brass case and push-fit lid. The glass is in excellent condition. The brass case is in very good condition. The compass is in excellent working order, and finds North well. The precise dating makes this a very rare example of one of Francis Barker's most distinctive designs. (An almost identical compass is illustrated on p.106 of Paul Crespel's excellent book 'Trade Mark London', further similar examples can be found in the book, which can be viewed at ) Dimensions: 38mm diameter, 15mm depth If you need any further information, please email. _gsrx_ read more
