FREDERICK AUGUSTUS PORTER BARNARD , (1802-1889), born in Mass., Graduated Yale in 1828; Taught at the American Asylum for the Deaf & Dumb at Hartford, Ct., 1831-1832 and at the NY Institute for the Instruction of the Deaf & Dumb, 1832-1838; Professor at the University of Alabama, 1838-1854; Chancellor of the Univ. of Mississippi from 1854 until he resigned in 1861 because of his Unionist sympathies; 10th President of Columbia College (now Columbia Univ.) in NYC, from 1864 until his death in 1889. Barnard College is named in his honor, as is the Barnard Observatory at the Univ. of Mississippi.1866 dated cut signature, being a closing from a letter, all in Barnard's hand, which reads:"given in the evening. Respectfully, F. Au. P.
