FRENCH EMPIRE MAHOGANY VITRINE CABINETCirca late 19th CenturyItem # 130009GOU23In two parts, this French Empire Style Mahogany Antique Vitrine Cabinet is a most attractive piece. A piece of convenient proportions, not being overwhelming in any way, the highly appropriate depth and form work to repress the natural glamor of the form. Years of enjoyment in a bright room have mellowed the mahogany into a soft cognac tone, the warm brown-red of the grains perfectly complimented by the burlap backing inside of the glass cabinet - noteworthy and of great charm is the original pane of glass still retained in the door; the light rippled surface of hand blown glass is a most attractive accent.Mounted with cast gilt bronze embellishments of Neoclassical influence, there is a refinement about the overall form that is very striking. The backboards chamfered along their edges to rest in the mitered stiles. While the top is lacking shelves, the "notched" system for the shelves runs along either side to readily accept new glass or wood shelves if you choose to have some crafted. The base has a single shelf, again using the notched track for customizable heights.While it has some flaws, mostly in the form of little dings, chips and the discolored alligatored shellac to the right side of the case, this is a difficult form to come upon and is just read more
