For three thousand years, at least, people have used clay for making various items such as dishes, toys, bricks, chimneys, talismans, etc. This enthusiasm for working in clay was due to a very simple abundance - rich deposits of high quality clays in red, brown, and light-gray colors which provided basic raw-materials for potters. T were once about seven hundred locations in Ukraine w this craft could be observed. All of the wares had much in common as being of Ukrainian design while, at the same time, they differed in their shapes, surface colors, and ornament. Clay was already used in building and in magic as long ago as in the early Paleolithic age. The wooden framework of each house was covered by a thick layer of clay. The first plates and dishes were made in the same way-- using wicker. Later, vessels were formed out of clay without the benefit of any additional devices. The potter's wheel didn't appear until the first century A.D. The ancient peoples held a special attitude toward clay. They attributed magic and curative qualities to it.
