Ukrainian Hutsul Earthenware Terracotta Bell Dear Bidders! Pottery is one of the ancient crafts still practiced in Ukraine. For three thousand years, at least, people have used clay for making various items such as dishes, toys, bricks, chimneys, talismans, etc. This enthusiasm for working in clay was due to a very simple abundance - rich deposits of high quality clays in red, brown, and light-gray colors which provided basic raw-materials for potters. T were once about seven hundred locations in Ukraine w this craft could be observed. All of the wares had much in common as being of Ukrainian design while, at the same time, they differed in their shapes, surface colors, and ornament. Clay was already used in building and in magic as long ago as in the early Paleolithic age. The wooden framework of each house was covered by a thick layer of clay. The first plates and dishes were made in the same way-- using wicker. Later, vessels were formed out of clay without the benefit of any additional devices. The potter's wheel didn't appear until the first century A.D. The ancient peoples held a special attitude toward clay. They attributed magic and curative qualities to it. In fact, in Ukraine, "clay" and "earth" were synonymous terms. Sometimes clay was perceived as a higher form of the earth, the source of strength and health. Becoming soiled with clay wasnâe(tm)t considered to be annoying, because it was "holy earth." Potters were held in high regard by the general population. As people who dealt with substances such as earth and fire and who could make almost anything and give it hardness with heat, they appeared godlike. In reality, a potter dealt with all the elements reputed by the Greek philosopherâe(tm)s theory to exist in the universe. Many ancient nations entertained myths about God as a potter who made Man or even the entire universe from clay. In the folklore texts of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, a potter might be described as a magician, a wise man, or even as a medium between the world of the living and that of the deceased. In those stories, the representatives of the devil were vampires (those who died unnaturally). The potter was the one who struggled against them. He defended people from vampires and cured diseases. As a rule, he won over the Evil One. T is Unique Ukrainian Hutsul Earthenware Bell. This bell are done by classic Terracotta method in new design. Terracotta craft involves using clay to prepare brown unglazed earthenware intended as building material. Terracotta is molded in many states into figures inspired by local legends and iconography. This is the type of pottery made by ukrainian artist who live in Carpathian mountain region of Ukraine. Dimensions: 3 1/2 inches height, 2 1/2 inches diameter.
