Major General William R. Shafter Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient Cut Signature on Autograph Album Page Item Description: A William R. Shafter signature, cut (4.5" x 1.5") from a larger piece of paper and affixed to a 19th century autograph album page (7.5" x 4.5"). The signature reads as follows: "Very Respect (full) y, Wm R. Shafter". The title, "Major Genl U.S.A." has been added below his signature in another hand. Condtion: Very good. Biography: William R. Shafter (1835 – 1906) Union Army officer during the American Civil War who received America's highest military decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions at the Battle of Fair Oaks. Of Note: - Captured at the Battle of Thompson's Station and spent 3 months in a Confederate prison. - Prominent role in the Spanish–American War. - Fort Shafter, Hawaii, is named for him. - The city of Shafter, California is named for him. - He was known informally as " Pecos Bill ".
