This rare and beautiful bronze medal is a "journee" which was issued in France to commemorate the efforts of the gallant Serbs who, assaulted on all sides by Bulgars, Austrians, Turks and Germans, held out for the Allies during WW1. Landing forces in Salonika (Greece), the British, French and Commonwealth troops made every effort to cut their way through to the relief of their Allies but failed. Nevertheless, the Serbs fought on to the bitter end when they were finally over-run. The medal is 1.4" in diameter (35mm) and is in very good condition. It shows Serbian refugees on one side with the legend "Gloire aux Serbs" and the Coats of Arms of France and Serbia on the other with the date 1916. A rare and historic medal, a reminder of that greatest of all conflicts, the First World War and one of France's most gallant allies. P&P £2.00, OVERSEAS £3.00.
