A GREAT LATE 18th CENTURY CARVED HANGING WALL BOX, PENNSYLVANIA, CIRCA 1760-1800, in native whitewood or poplar IN THE GREATEST ORIGINAL OXIDIZED OX-BLOOD RED PAINT. Great Form, nice full and tall shaped back with GREAT SAWTOOTH cut edge. It has a wonderful half round central cut out design in the front with a nice shaped and cut side. These wall boxes were used to hold a Mortar and Pestle when not in use. The mortar would rest on the half moon cut out and the pestle would be placed above it held by the scalloped side cuts. the bottom would not be tight so that the item would be able to drain and air dry. The form is the BEST you can get, the CONDITION is GREAT, no repairs or restorations, no missing pieces only honest 200 year old wear and tear. No added nails, but great shrinkage cracks along the front and side, (really, this is what you WANT to see). Untouched early square headed nails, all original. To top it off, this box is in the its original oxidized red ox-blood painted surface which has oxidized and crackled through the ages. This great wall box is 11" tall, 5" wide and 3 1/2" deep. It exhibits only the typical wear and tear you would see from almost 200 years of use as I have shown in the photos. FRESH TO THE MARKET. From a great old collection from Pennsylvania.
