GRINDING SLAB & ROLLING PESTLE, SEBASTOPOL, CALIFORNIAMortarHeigh : 1 ""Length: 17 ""Width: 13"Weight: 14 lbs 2.8 ozPestleLength: 5 ¼"Diameter: 2"Weight : 1 lb 2.9 ozThis outstanding mortar came from a late 1800s find near Atascadero Creek, outside of Sebastopol, California. Found in a cache (pit) of stone artifacts along the creek's sandy bed, this assemblage was stored in a local outbuilding until this site acquired it and several other stone items.According to descendants of the collector, within the pit were several stone axes, grinding stones and other stone tools.Dings, nicks, abrasion scars are evident on this expertly carved grinding platform. The platform shows evidence of continuous intensive use as can be seen by the slight curve in the center--from leaning into/on the rolling grinder and moving back-forth.The Pomo Native Americans were the main cultural group living in the Russian River watershed area. They were known for processing large quantities of ACORNS from the abundant oaks in the region.Close examination of this grinding platform striation wear-pattern suggests it was used for many years. For anyone needing a beautifully formed, functional artifact used for centuries by the indigenous Pomo of the central California coast, this is it!Abrasion scratches, dings, cuts.
