Historically important, Arts-and-Crafts, T. J. Wheatley Pottery Company "Grueby-Green," 10.5 X 8.5 inch vase, c. 1905. This 102 year old, extremely rare piece of Arts-and-Crafts pottery was designed by the T. J. Wheatley Pottery Co., founded in Cincinnati , OH by T.J. Wheatley in 1880. Wheatley Pottery was the first Ohio pottery (before Rookwood Pottery) to introduce a line of matt green pieces, in direct imitation of Grueby Pottery from Massachusetts . The precise moment of Wheatley's entry into the Arts-and-Crafts Pottery movement is estimated to have been around 1903-05. Wheatley was considered by many to be an enterprising business man who saw the appeal of matt green glaze and recognized that the Grueby-style of low-relief surface decoration was practically made for casting in a mold, at a time when other art pottery makers were just starting to see the value in mass produced art pottery wares. Wheatley's designs usually had vertical lines perfect for concealing mold marks, and a covering of heavy, textured opaque glazes which obscured methods of production, as with this fine example vase.
