Historically important, Arts-and-Crafts, T. J. Wheatley Pottery Company "Grueby-Green," 10.5 X 8.5 inch vase, c. 1905. This 102 year old, extremely rare piece of Arts-and-Crafts pottery was designed by the T. J. Wheatley Pottery Co., founded in Cincinnati , OH by T.J. Wheatley in 1880. Wheatley Pottery was the first Ohio pottery (before Rookwood Pottery) to introduce a line of matt green pieces, in direct imitation of Grueby Pottery from Massachusetts . The precise moment of Wheatley's entry into the Arts-and-Crafts Pottery movement is estimated to have been around 1903-05. Wheatley was considered by many to be an enterprising business man who saw the appeal of matt green glaze and recognized that the Grueby-style of low-relief surface decoration was practically made for casting in a mold, at a time when other art pottery makers were just starting to see the value in mass produced art pottery wares. Wheatley's designs usually had vertical lines perfect for concealing mold marks, and a covering of heavy, textured opaque glazes which obscured methods of production, as with this fine example vase. Wheatley played an seminal role in founding the Cincinnati Art Pottery in 1880. Wheatley also started his own company, T.J. Wheatley and Company in 1880, and then changed the name to the Wheatley Pottery Company when Isaac Kahn joined the team in 1903. The Wheatley Pottery Co. was destroyed by fire in 1910. Art pottery pieces from the Wheatley Pottery Company are extremely hard to find. Wheatley "art pottery" wares were signed with conjoined WP, either impressed or on an attached paper label. Architectural and faience products were signed "Wheatley" in block letters or with impressed catalog numbers. This Wheatley vase has the conjoined "WP" beneath the glaze, designating it "Art Pottery." This important, antique, Arts-and-Crafts vase has 2 easily professionally repaired chips to 2 of the feet, and 2 tight hairlines in the rim. Overall in very good condition, but sold as is. This Wheatley vase has been appraised by both Craftsman Auctions and by the appraisal staff at Just Art Pottery. This is a nice piece of American Arts-and-Crafts pottery history for any collector. Due to the 10.5 size and 5 lbs weight, shipping will be $20.00. Payment must be recieved within 5 days of auction's end, or item will be relisted. Thanks for bidding!
