A finely potted late 19th century Chinese famille rose porcelain bowl of shallow depth in the coveted traditional pattern of "flowers brimming over" ( guo jiang hua ). The motif starts on the outside, where a fruit and flower-laden melon vine twines its way around the side, up a bamboo cane and over the edge to bless the cavetto with seed-filled bounty. Melons symbolize the ancient Chinese wish for countless generations of progeny. A pair of lacewings, also icons of fruitful marriage, hover near both ends of the melon vine, looking for an auspicious time and spot to deposit their eggs. On the base of the of the bowl, a six-character overglaze iron red mark in standard script of "Made during the Guangxu Reign of the Great Qing Dynasty" ( Da Qing Guangxu Nian Zhi ). The Guangxu Emperor ruled China from 1875-1908. This mark is of that period. SIZE: 7.5 inches (18.9 cm) diameter CONDITION: Fine, with some rubbing to enamels and glaze but generally less than average wear for age and no discernible porcelain losses or restoration. Body and glaze exhibit the expected small potting, enameling and firing variances, including tiny pinholes, a few small glaze ripples, and other such characteristics held in common with all traditional Chinese handmade ceramics.
