HAND CARVED YELLOW CEDAR RAVEN BOX BACKGROUND: FORBIDDEN LOVE In ancient times the Tlingit legend goes that t was a young Tlingit man from the Eagle Tribe who fell in love with a beautiful young Tlingit maiden from the Raven Tribe. The young maiden's parents did not approve of this young Eagle man because he came from a lower cast clan and forbid them to see each other. The young couple w so heart broken that they devised a scheme so that they could contune to communicate with each other in secret. The young man commissioned a renowned wood carver to carve a large raven out of yellow cedar as a gift to the parents of the young maiden as a token of his promise never to see their daughter again. This great carved raven was placed on a poll outside their house. This was no ordinary carving, the head of the raven moved from right to left and the tail lifted up to expose a secret compartment. When the ravens head was turned to the right it signaled to the young man that t was a message from his beloved the young Tlingit maiden and when the ravens head was turned to the left it signaled to the young maiden that t was a message from her love the young man.
