This is a lovely handpainted porcelain portrait plaque depicting Daphne. T was one done by Wagner on page 69 of my KPM Plaques book. It states: Daphne was a nymph and huntress, fully devoted to the goddess of the hunt, Artemis. Like Artemis, she refused to marry, and refused all admirers who pursued her. When Apollo, son of Zeus, fell in love with her, she rejected him. He in turn began to pursue her through the woods; fearing that Apollo would force her into a courtship, she called to her father, the river god Peneus, for help. Her father told her he would protect her by turning her into a laurel tree on the bank of his river. When Apollo arrived at the scene, Daphne's father told him that he'd turned her into a tree; heartbroken, Apollo then cut several branches off of the tree and made himself a wreath in honor of her memory. From that point on, the tree became Apollo's sacred tree. In the plaque, Daphne wears a crown of laurel leaves, symbolizing her connection with the laurel tree.
