This is an antique wooden lacquered pillow from Japan . It has been hand painted with a different design on each side. The pillow is 10 inches long and is 5.5 inches high and has a depth of 3.5 inches at its widest part. (25cm x 14cm x 9 cm). This 19 th century pillow was used by women who had elaborate hairstyles, such as geisha or other women who had their hair done, to support their head so that their sculpted hair-do would not be messed up while sleeping. The overall background is black. One side has a picture of a young child sleeping on a large leaf, using two watermelons for a pillow. The opposite side shows two children on a large leaf with one of them leaning on a large melon. The other sides show flowers. This old pillow is in very good condition. T are a couple of places w the lacquer has worn off and exposed the red under layer or the wood below - on the edges of the side with the two children. T is one area w on the top w the lacquer is cracked, on the top long edge with the red chrysanthemums. Two small areas of the corners and one small area on the top edge have the lacquer worn off to expose the wood. Overall the condition is very good. This is a rare item. I purchased it at an antique store in Japan 25 years ago. I never saw another like it in Japan or since.
