The Hartley Colliery Disaster, 1862 by John Elliott McCUTCHEON. This 176 page hardback book with jacket measures approx 9" x 6". It was First published at Seaham by E. McCutcheon in 1963. This edition is the 1974 reprint by schwarz-holywell of Backworth

Dramatic account of the The Hartley Colliery Disaster, 1862 in which 204 men and boys were entombed. Recently the world has been fascinated by trapped miners in Chile it should be noted that there is a parallel between the 2 events in that the miners were trapped. The difference at Hartley was that gas killed them all before the heroic breakthrough of the rescuers.
