It measures 51/2 inches by 6 1/2 inches. In great condition!Virginia Metalcrafters was founded on October 6th, 1890, as the W.J. Loth Stove Company. Located in Waynesboro, Virginia, on the western slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. In 1938, the company installed equipment for melting brass and other non-ferrous metals and began to market products under the name Virginia Metalcrafters.Although World War II halted the casting of brass products, immediately after the war, Clemmer continued developing the gift line. Clemmer signed a license with Colonial Williamsburg in 1951 to produce brass and iron reproductions. The company’s hand casting and finishing methods were the same as those used to form the original antiques. The majority of Virginia Metalcrafters products are made by the process of sand casting. Sand casting is a 10,000 year old process and art that involves creating a cavity in damp sand and then filling that cavity with molten metal. After cooling the sand is broken away to reveal the rough casting.Because each sand mold must be destroyed in order to remove the casting, each casting is unique. The process begins with a hand carved pattern (called a “design”). A tool maker mounts the pattern on a metal plate which is then used to make each sand mold.Posted with eBay Mobile
