Hawaiian Volcano Painting on Wood BowlCirca 1915 Rare 'Volcano School' Painting SUB-TITLE ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ Antique Hawaiian oil painting, on a wooden bowl, of an erupting volcano, probably Kilauea.Unsigned. Circa 1915. SIZE: Diameter - 9" / Depth - 1.35" This fine little impressionist painting on a wooden bowl probably depicts the 1912 eruption of Mount Kilauea, and was likely sold in Hawaiian Islands, possibly at the 'Volcano House', a hotel near the top of the Kilauea crater that was popular with tourists wanting to view the volcano and it's lava flows.The painting was done with oils and although the piece is unsigned, the artist looks to have been a professional who painted many view of lava and erupting volcanos, possibly Jules Tavernier, D. Howard Hitchcock, Joseph Nawahi, or Charles Furneaux. They were all members of the 'Volcano School' of painting and created similar scenes. The bowl itself is lathe-turned and looks to be some type of Hawaiian wood, possibly Koa or Milo.Both the bowl and the painting are in good original condition. The painting has no prior restoration, but has several very small chips to the paint in the dark area near the bottom foreground. These could easily be touched up and the painting could use a light cleaning by a conservator. This would be worth having done, but that being read more
