For sale a copy of a rare photo-illustrated book privately published in honour of the explorer Henry Morton Stanley: THE AMERICAN TESTIMONIAL BANQUET TO HENRY M. STANLEY. IN RECOGNITION OF HIS HEROIC ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE CASE OF HUMANITY, SCIENCE & CIVILIZATION, AND A GREETING TO HIS CHIEF OFFICERS. PORTMAN ROOMS, LONDON, MAY 30th 1890. Privately printed, London 1890, large octavo (7 x 10 inches) with pasted-in text and original photographs mounted on 12 stiff board pages bound in with silk covered hinges, and with decorative gold endpapers and all edges gilt. Five very fine silver gelatin mounted photographic portraits feature posed images of: Henry Morton Stanley , Lieutenant W. G. Stairs , surgeon Thomas Heazle Parke , Captain Robert Henry Nelson , and Mr. A. J. Mounteney-Jephson . A sixth photograph depicts the testimonial shield and medallion. Other pages have mounted texts of: the title-page details; the names of the Committee and Honorary Stewards; a description of the Stanley Testimonial Shield and other tributes; the Menu; and the Toast and Music lists. Bound in original blind stamped pictorial full calf (scuffed and corners worn), featuring an American Eagle atop star spangled arms with “Stanley” crossing the shield on a diagonal.
