You are viewing a Syvanite specimen, which is part of a large lot collected by a long deceased uncle who obtained it in Calaveras Co. in the Sierra Nevada gold country back in the 1920's, so I can't tell you the exact mine it came from. But it is high-grade, weighing 46 grams and measuring 1 1/2" X 2" X 1 11/4". Sylvanite contains silver, tellurium, and gold. Gold is typically found as native gold, as an alloy with metals such as silver and copper, and as trace amounts in a few minerals. Being a significant part of a non-alloyed mineral is very uncommon for gold, and thus Sylvanite is unique mineral, and a rare one as well. Sylvanite averages about 28% gold. Tellurium, or Telluride, is 10 times rarer than Platinum.
