Koch, George Joseph (American 1884-1951) California Impressionist - Carmel Artist ColonyDescription: Signed Seascape titled "HIGH SEA", oil on canvas, 35-1/4" x 40" - Koch George Joseph (American 1884-1951)George Joseph Koch was an American painter born in Newark, New Jersey in 1884. Koch maintained studios in NYC and Mystic, CT after the turn of the century. After visiting California in 1914, he returned in 1917 to establish a home in the Carmel Highlands. Due to anti-German sentiment in the U.S. during WWI, for about a decade he spelled his name Kotch. He was a co-founder of the Carmel Art Association in 1927 and served as director for the first two years. A highly skilled painter, his oversize oils include marines and landscapes of the Monterey Peninsula which have sold in the past at auction for as much as $12,000 ("Carmel Breakers" Butterfields 1996). Recently - since 2001 - the average price his paintings have sold for is $3,215. A full list of paintings sold since 1980's is available on request.
