HOKUSAI Japanese Woodblock Print FUJI AND BIRDS 1920s HOKUSAI Mount Fuji Beyond the Waves Date: c. late 1920s published by Nishinomiya; listed as No. 587 in 1930 Nishinomiya catalog Size: 7.25" x 8.5" Condition: VG, uncirculated print, never framed, minor soils Impression: Fine, tight registration and solid keylines Color: Fine, deep saturated color and bleed through to verso -- the color on this print is much brighter than other copies of this print I have seen A very well preserved copy of this rarely seen design by Hokusai was originally published in his famous book One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji . We see the spray from the crest of the wave fancifully transformed into small birds, as Fuji looms majestically in the distance.
