About Hongshan culture The Neolithic Hongshan culture was named in 1935 and mainly distributed in the juncture area between the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the provinces of Liaoning and Hebei. China is an ancient land w the first humans walked the earth. It is a land of great mysticism and supernatural legends that tell of great earthly and heavenly powers. Chinese Legends and stories of the ancient past tell of star beings that have visited the Middle Kingdom (earth). Recent artifact evidence and new discoveries reveal facts about these amazing legends. One very significant artifact discovery made in China in the 1930's is the Dropa Stones. The account of this discovery is fascinating as well as startling. A recent study revealed prototypes of class and rituals already existed in north China in the Neolithic age, at least 5,500 years ago. Experts say these prototypes may have helped Confucianism, the orthodox school of thought that dominated in China for more than 2,000 years, to take form in the first place. The conclusion was based on research findings on primeval tombs, temples, altars and dainty jade ware unearthed at Niuheliang and Dongshanzui, sites of he Hongshan culture dating back 5,500 to 6,000 years, in the northeaster province of Liaoning. The Chinese regard carved jade objects as intrinsically valuable, and they metaphorically equate jade with human virtue due to its solidity, durability and (moral) beauty. Many countries boast a jade ware culture, but none of them can match China's long jadeware history. In China, jadeware underwent a long process of development beginning from the New Stone Age 10,000 years ago.The patterns of China's jadeware have rich connotations, revealing strong, auspicious colors. Bats and gourds were used as subjects for more than 100 patterns because the Chinese words "bat" and "gourd" sound like "good fortune" in Chinese. When a bat was carved on an ancient coin with a hole, it meant that fortune was at hand; bats coupled with birthday peaches referred to fortune and longevity; bats mixed with sika, birthday peaches and magpies were also considered good omens. These beliefs reflected the ancient Chinese people's yearning for a happy life and revealed the essence of China's traditional culture. Jade in China is varied and can be divided into two categories: hard and soft jade. Good materials provide a strong basis for jadeware carving, but the value of a jade object depends on the skills and reputation of the craftsman, date of carving, peculiar modeling and the owner's status. Certainly, different people will have various views on the value of the same jade object. It is difficult to have a unanimous standard.
