6" sifter basket by Tressa Collateta from Second Mesa, Arizona. Made entirely of fresh Yucca.This fully coiled woven basket plaque was made by Tressa Collateta . The basket is woven with yucca around bundles of grasses.Hopi coiled baskets are woven mainly at Second Mesa. The women gather wild yucca leaves at different times of the year to get green, yellow or white colors which are most often used in Hopi basketry. If red is used in a basket, the white yucca is dyed with a local plant, either Navajo tea or Hopi tea, and for black, commercial dye is used. Wild grass, usually galleta grass, is gathered for the bundles that make up the foundation, or inside, of the coils. After the leaves are split in half lengthwise and cleaned, they are split into narrow splints that are no more than 1/8" wide. The preparation of materials and the fully coiled basketry technique are time consuming tasks that take time to master.The Hopi Reservation is located in northeastern Arizona. The Hopi Reservation is completely surrounded by the Navajo Reservation. Within the Hopi Reservation are three Mesas which contain Hopi Villages: First Mesa (Walpi, Hano and Sichomoivi), Second Mesa (Shongopavi, Mishongnovi,Shipaulovi, and Third Mesa, (Hotevilla, Bacavi, Moencopi, Kykotsmovi and Oraibi.
