The Improved and Illustrated Game of Dr. Busby, Ives, Salem Mass, 1843Original antique card game published by W. & S.B. Ives of Salem, Massachusetts in 1843. Ives is credited with being the first major manufacturer of games in this country and this version of Dr. Busby was the first card game mass printed and published in America.Anne Wale Abbott created the Dr. Busby in Salem and produced a few copies for local use. She approached the Ives bothers and after a few refusals, Ives agreed to publish a small quantity of the deck with the name IMPROVED AND ILLUSTRATED. The game became so popular that McLoughlin Bros, Parker Bros and the other publishing houses produced their own versions that are a favorite of collectors today. This version also contains one of the earliest representations of an African-American in an American game.Cards measure 2 7/16" x 3 5/8" and have age wear and stains from being over 172 years old -- otherwise they are in remarkably great shape with no tears. Sleeve box is detached at edges with hand sewn repair to one. Game is complete with all 20 of the original hand-colored cards. Early games like this were produced by hand-coloring a monochrome print, a time-consuming and expensive process. Some of the cards retain that bright hand coloring. Thanks for looking.
