Mata Ortiz's pottery is world famous for its creative vitality

We owe to Anthropologist Spencer MacCallum the discovery and promotion of Juan Quezada's Art work and the Mata Ortiz art revolution.

Mata Ortiz is a small town in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico and it is w Juan Quezada lived since he was a young boy. Juan Quezada is the originator of this artistic movement called New Casas Grandes or Mata Ortiz's Pottery.

All started when Juan found small pottery pieces of the almost unknown Paquime or Casas Grandes Culture. About 15 miles from Mata Ortiz, the ruins of the great Paquime city are found. The Paquime Culture had flourished between about 1000 and 1400. Without any technology, Juan "recreated the entire ceramic technology from clay preparation to firing, using only the sherds to guide him" with his pottery innovation, Juan began an artistic revolution in this small village of Mata Ortiz . At the present time, the town of Mata Ortiz is known worldwide, and from every seven residents of Mata Ortiz, one is a pottery maker.

As Susan Lowell describes new Casas Grandes' pottery in the book, The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz" Each olla is unique. They glisten, they gleam, and they swell with life, displaying mathematical ingenuity side by side with sly humor, as geometric zigzags melt into stylized animal designs."
