1928 Irish Shilling in Almost Uncirculated Condition This auction is for an Irish Shilling, or simply a bob as we used to call them, dated 1928. (Despite the shilling being gone from circulation for almost 40 years now, people in Ireland will still use the expression "here is a couple of bob for you" when they are giving someone loose change - in Euros!). The shilling features a Harp, Date and Saorstat Éireann on the obverse and a bull on the reverse. They are about the same size as the American quarter dollar or one Euro. Made from 75% silver this Shilling is in Almost Uncirculated Condition - with some of it's original lustre - but see the photos of the Actual Coin in the auction and judge for yourself! There were only 2,700,000 Irish shillings minted in 1928 - their first ever year of issue and very few were collected at the time. Those that survived usually came from mint sets and were badly marked from being handled. Then nearly all of these silver coins were withdrawn from circulation in the late 1960s and melted down for their 75% silver content. It is very difficult to obtain these early Irish silver coins in any half decent grade, but this is now your chance to get a top class example! Coins and notes are normally shipped - securely packed in a reinforced envelope - within 24 hours of receipt of payment by Priority Airmail, read more
