Jack Kamen is 87 years old and was one of the major In-House Artists in the halcyon days of EC from 1950-1955, along with Feldstein, Craig, Kurtzman, Wood, Davis, Ingels, Evans, Orlando et al. Sadly out of those great names only Kamen, Feldstein & Davis are still with us. Jack Kamen EC Original Artwork is extremely rare in the marketplace, not least because his son has snapped up most of his Father's work when it surfaces for sale. One of the pics (taken 2 years ago) on this auction shows Jack in his son's (Dean) huge basement, given over exclusively to displaying his Father's EC Artwork. Notwithstanding the rarity of Kamen's EC stuff appearing for sale, is the fact that this piece is the Splashpage from a Sci-Fi story he did in 1951 from WEIRD FANTASY # 6. Jack was perhaps better known eventually for the EC work he drew for their 'Crime' and 'Shock' titles, most notably for the 'Film Noir' type stories and his depiction of the female form, the 'femme fatale' types he drew for these stories in particular. However its easy to see from this piece, just how great his versatility was. This really is an absolutely stunning piece with great attention to detail, and is a testament to the premise that he should have perhaps done more stories for the EC Sci-Fi titles, although Wally Wood and Al Williamson amongst others made those titles read more
