FRENCH COUNTRY STYLE HONEY/BUTTERSCOTCH BLACK JAPAN PAPER MACHE TRAY This tray is stunning. It features a lush floral bouquet on a background of honey jet black with gold/mustard embellishments. Please take a close look at those colors. Pink roses shaded in white, cool blue everyw and even a bit of burgandy. You don't find this color combination in these trays often. Nor do you see the almost amberina effect of the pink tinged yellow ones. It is marked on the back as "Made in Japan Patent # 67976" which indicates that it should be pre WWII. It also bears an importers mark of A L inc. and the incised flower mark. I believe this one was made over a wire mould. The later ones were pressed out of a form but this one has the additional weight and slight variations of shape that leads me to the conclusion that it is handmade. This tray is perfect for any formal area of your home. It will add a touch of elegance in your dining room or living room. And of course it is perfect as the focus of a display of a collection of early Japan paper mache trays. It measures 22" by 12" plenty large enough for a tray table if you like.
