DETAILS OF ITEM You are viewing a Japanese Chess Shogi game set with pieces called Koma and the traditional Shogi Board with legs. The board measures 13.75" x 12.5" x 6.25" high. The world's first chess game is said to have originated in India approximately in the 7th century AD. It migrated both westward and northward, changing along the way. The western branch became Shatranj in Arabia and what is known as Orthodox Chess in Europe. The northern branch became Xiangqi in China and Changgi in Korea. This Asian form of chess game arrived in Japan between the 10th to 12th centuries and it eventually changed and formed what is now known as Japanese Shogi. The present form has been played in Japan since as early as the 16th century. This set comes complete with 20 pieces each per player plus one extra pawn piece all together making 41 pieces. Shogi counters are flat irregular pentagons generally made of wood as in this set. A kanji symbol is written on the top of each counter, denoting its identity as a starting read more
